A midweek autumn break in Cornwall

Wednesday 2 August 2023

Whilst many come to visit Cornish shores during the summer months, it’s the autumnal change that possibly brings the most magic. As the streets get quieter and the air gets colder, Cornwall transforms in a way that’s quite unlike any other part of the world. Our rolling green hills with our tree-lined valleys take on an auburn hue, marking the seasonal shift that we so love to see.

Here at Bodrugan Barton we embrace this change with open arms.  Cornwall in the autumn is a time for hot chocolates in front of the fire, wrapped-up beach walks watching the waves dance and a chance to cosy down with your favourite book at one of our comfortable cottages nestled in the Cornish countryside, with stunning views across farmland and out to sea. Bodrugan is a unique and well-kept haven that we love to share with visitors from near or far; it is our family home, a working farm, and we invite you to come and stay with us to experience Cornwall in all its glory.

When you come to stay with us at Bodrugan, we want you to have everything you need, and that includes a list of all that Cornwall has to offer! Our location, perched on the south coast of Cornwall, opens you up to a plethora of activities to enjoy with the whole family, so let’s jump in.

Walks

An autumn break in Cornwall isn’t complete without a few walks here and there. After all, the county is famous for them. Luckily for us and our guests, we have the incredible South West Coast Path right on our doorstep. Heading north will take you to the villages of Portmellon and Mevagissey, and up to Pentewan and beyond. From here you can do a circular walk, and don’t worry, there are plenty of pubs and cafés along the way.

If you head south, you will reach Gorran Haven – a delightful cove with café, baker and a feeling of stepping back to a simpler, wholesome era.  Some avid walkers can continue around the coastline to  the wonderful Vault Beach, Hemmick and Porthluney Bay with a café and the stunning backdrop of Caerhayes Castle.  For the non-walkers you can also drive to explore this beautiful cove and cafe. The castle, which will be reopening in February 2024, has the most wonderful gardens renowned for Camellias and Magnolias.

Pubs and restaurants

The colder months here in Cornwall highlight our extensive collection of pubs and restaurants, as intrepid wanderers seek log burners, hearty meals and good ale. The Cornish heritage of fishing, mining and sailing gave life to centuries-old free houses that are still standing to this day and they are often rich in history.

The beautiful village of St Ewe is where you will find The Crown Inn and it’s only a short drive from Bodrugan. This 16th century pub serves a wide selection of home-cooked, quality food and great ale, perfect for those cosy Sunday afternoons. In Pentewan you can hunker down at The Ship Inn; with 250 years of history you’ll be transported back to a Kernow of old. Or, in the fishing village of Mevagissey you are spoilt for choice with good restaurants, great pubs and vibrant cafés showcasing local food.

In Gorran, you’ll find The Barley Sheaf, a recently renovated historical building that dishes up fine food and a wide selection of beverages. They also welcome dogs, so you needn’t leave your four-legged friend behind! If a family-run restaurant is what you’re looking for then why not check out the Kingswood Bar and Restaurant in Pentewan? This modern but welcoming environment serves an ever-changing seasonal menu.

Coastal Adventures

At Bodrugan, the ocean is on our doorstep. We are very lucky to have such coastal expanses to explore all year round, and we want our guests to experience this too! The north coast of Cornwall is famous for its epic surf conditions, especially as the winter months get closer, so why not learn to surf? There is a range of surf schools along the coast, from Gwithian all the way up to Watergate Bay - this is a great way to spend the day, getting in the ocean and trying something new.

If you’d like to ease yourself into our chilly waters, then why not explore somewhere closer to home, with a sea dip at Portmellon or Gorran Haven? These sheltered coves are great for those wanting to dip their toes.

Day Trips

We know how tricky it can be to entertain the whole family on staycations like this one, but that’s not the case in Cornwall. Here we have a wide range of day-trip activities for all to enjoy, like the Eden Project! A day out here surrounded by flora and fauna will boggle your mind and ensnare your senses, as you travel across the world in moments thanks to educational talks and biome walks.

Another adventure comes in the form of The Lost Gardens of Heligan. A trip to these lost gardens is a great day out for everyone, as it’s a chance to get back to nature, which is exactly what Cornwall is all about. Or, if you’ve managed to duck away from the kids for a little bit, why not check out St Austell Brewery? This brewery is a staple across Kernow, and a tour is a chance to see behind the scenes and see the talented brewers in action!

Explore our cottages

All that adventuring can be exhausting, so once the kids are asleep and you’ve finally managed to put your feet up, why not enjoy a relaxing evening at Swallows Cottage, Rockpool or Shellseekers? With dinner cooking in the oven, enjoy comfort and serenity at your home away from home, with a glass of wine, a good book, or a gripping movie.  If it’s just the two of you, romantic Rowards Cottage offers fabulous views whether you are wrapped in a cosy blanket on the sofa or wallowing in the luxury roll top bath.

The magic of Cornwall in the cold awaits you – a welcome break from the heat of the summer months. We are on hand to answer any questions you may have, and to aid in the booking process, so if an autumn escape is seeming like an attractive proposition, be sure to get in touch:
